Benjamin W. Boyd, Jr., affectionately known as “Champ” son of Amie J. Boyd and the late Benjamin W. Boyd Sr., was born February 11, 1963 and quietly slept away on June 21, 2022 at the Capital Health Regional Medical Center, Trenton, NJ to be with his Heavenly Father.
 
Ben received his formal education within the public school system in Ewing Township, NJ. During his youth he attended Union Baptist Church, Trenton, NJ and St. John Baptist Church, Ewing Township, NJ.
 
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving from June 1982 until March of 1985. He served in the Air Defense Artillery as a Systems Technician Specialist at military bases located in Korea, Germany California and Texas. Ben also maintained systems of electronic equipment for missile defense.
 
Subsequent to his military career, Ben furthered his education majoring in Boiler Operations at Mercer County Community College, West Windsor, NJ and received his Black Seal Boiler Operator License in November of 2000. While employed by New Jersey Board Of Education, Buildings and Grounds for 11 years, he studied Pool Operations in conjunction with Water and Filter Maintenance. Ben also utilized his training at Lawrenceville Preparatory School, Lawrenceville, NJ (part-time) as a Stationary Engineer with responsibilities to include HVAC, electrical
and heating plant maintenance.
 
In 2012 Ben relocated to Columbia, SC and was employed by the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDOC) as a Corrections Officer and Dispatcher until 2021. During his tenure with SCDOC he received a “Continuous and Outstanding Five Years of Service” Certificate, additionally he was presented with the “Can Do” Award for exhibiting the character quality of Alertness. Ben attended the Bible Way Church of Atlas Road, Columbia, SC and volunteered at Christ Central Ministries Inc., Columbia, SC whose goal is to meet the basic and spiritual needs of the homeless and disadvantaged. He served as Security for a number of their community events; also he was an advocate for at risk youth. 
 
Champ leaves to cherish fond memories, his loving Mother Amie, one sister Kimberly A. Boyd (Alton Greer) paternal aunts Josie Boyd, Miami, FL, Lorraine Boyd, Jersey City, NJ and Mary Boyd, Macon, GA. Maternal uncle Richard (Junie) Johnson III, Hopkins, SC also maternal aunts, Susie M. Banks, Lawrenceville, NJ, Louise D. Johnson, Hopkins, SC, Dorothy A. Milton, Hopkins, SC, Gerri L. (Willie) Leonard, Stafford, VA, and Veronica V. (Bernard) Green, Columbia, SC and numerous cousins, loving relatives and dear friends.
 
Service will be 2:30pm Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Ewing Church Cemetery & Mausoleum,100 Scotch Rd, Ewing Township, NJ 08628.​ Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home.
