Our beloved Bernice Fletcher, passed away peacefully, at Jefferson Health in Cherry Hill, NJ on June 2, 2023. She was born in Wadesboro, NC on January 25,1938, to Clara Bell Burch Hairston and Charles Hardison. As a young child, she relocated to Trenton, NJ along with her mother, however she continued to spend many summers with her grandmother "Big Mama" in North Carolina.
Bernice received her education through the Trenton Public Schools District. She started her career as a Principle Clerk with the State of New Jersey, Division of Taxation, where she remained until retirement. She married the late Donald Fletcher Sr. from Princeton, NJ in 1954. Donald was the love of her life and best friend. Together the two of them shared 9 children Marilyn Fletcher, Donald Fletcher Jr., Carol Sanderson, Anthony Fletcher, Marvin Fletcher (Kimberly), Yvette Anderson, Wendy Lattimer, Mark Fletcher (Sandra), and Star Fletcher and two step-children Don Don Fletcher, and Dominque Anderson.
Bernice is predeceased by son Anthony Fletcher, sisters Edore Tiggett and Gail Inge, brother Bud McCormick, sons-in-law Mike Anderson and Glenwood "Bo" Lattimer, Sr.
She is survived by her siblings Gwendolyn Montford (Peoria, Illinois), Sandra Hairston (Trenton, NJ), John McCormick (Wadesboro, NC), Odell Bennett (Florida), Lawrence Hairston (Trenton, NJ), and William Hairston, (Trenton, NJ). She also leaves behind her Aunt Alice Sloan and Uncle Eddie Rufus Tate, followed by a long lineage of 5 generations of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins. Bernice also had a special connection with lifelong friend Bertha Collins, Diana Taylor, and son-in Law Thomas Lott Pittman, Sr., as well as her CNA's Ronita, Michelle, Victoria, and Theresa. .
Bernice was a beautiful, strong, and God-fearing woman. She was affectionately known by her grandchildren as "Bernie Mac". She devoted her life to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her passion for her family was evident in how she provided support, care, correction, and love. She enjoyed watching soap operas, attending church, going to the casino and cooking out. She will be remembered for her unyielding love for her family, beautiful and unforgettable smile, and forgiving personality. Bernice will be deeply missed, and she will forever live in our heart.
Funeral service will be 1pm Friday, June 9, 2023 at Union Baptist Church, 301 Pennington Ave., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hours will be 11am until the time of service. Interment will be at Ewing Cemetery, Ewing, NJ. Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home.
