Charity graduated from Hobbton High School in Newton Grove, North Carolina, in 1969. After her graduation, she made Trenton, NJ her new home. Upon her arrival, she promptly began her career with the State of New Jersey, where she became a Mental Health Counselor. She began her 50-year career at North Princeton Developmental Center in Montgomery Township and, after its closure in 1998, she transferred to Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, Trenton, NJ, where she eventually retired in 2019.
In 1998, she founded her catering company, Perrie's Catering, combining her love for traditional and nontraditional southern cuisine with healthy ingredients. This allowed individuals with health concern to enjoy her delicious meals. Charity was renowned for t her unique desserts, which included cakes, pies, and other tasty treats. Her passion for traveling around the world contributed to her expanding her catering services, reaching not only local, clientele but also national and international clientele as well.
Since 2009, Charity served as the Director of Health & Wellness for Building A Better Way For Trenton (A Better Way). As Director, she provided delicious food and led classes and workshops teaching those in/around Trenton how to prepare healthy and affordable dishes for themselves and their families.
Charity had a lifelong commitment to being of service. Throughout her life, she was heavily involved in the political process. As a teenager living in the South, she participated in marches and rallies demanding equal rights for women, youth, an₩ people of color. She continued to champion these
rights when she made Trenton her new home. She strongly supported candidates and platforms locally and nationally that advocated for the underserved and the forgotten. Since 1980, she devoted her time to volunteering at both the Trenton Ared Soup Kitchen and the Rescue Mission of Trenton, assisting those who were unsheltered, Over the/years, she also volunteered and donated, supporting Senior Saints (Senior Citizens) in need in Trenton. For nearly 50 years, she was a dedicated member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served as the Kitchen Supervisor and then as a Senior Usher. In 2004, she became a member of The International Faithful Order of The Eastern Star, Princess Menicca Chapter #124. In 2013, she transferred to Lady H.R. Smith Chapter #172. For the past decade, she served as Vice-President of Living A Powerful L.ife/in Her Shoes Inc. In recent years, she held the position of Treasurer and was a member of The Community Fellowship Choir & Group.
While Charity had a passion for serving and traveling, her greatest joy came from spending time with her beloved family. She will be deeply missed b/ her adoring daughter, Renea Whitaker, sons: Perry Shaw ll (Jennifer), Mark Powell and Alton Powell. Her grandchildren Shaneceque Whitaker, Zanobia Shaw, and Perry Shaw IV, and her great-grandson Owen Whitaker. Sisters: Helen Whitaker, Hepsie Armwood, and Sandra Green, as well as her brother, Elijah Whitaker. Sisters-in-law: Odell Whitaker and Gloria Jean Whitaker. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, loved ones, and friends.
In addition to her mother and father, she was Preceded in death by her former husband, Perry Shaw Jr, daughter, Latangie Whitaker, and sisters Daisy Owens, Mary Elizabeth Whitaker, Hattie Jane Whitaker, and Joyce Powell. Brothers, Walter Whitaker, Wade Whitaker, Matthew Whitaker, Otis Whitaker, Joseph Whitaker, and Johnny Whitaker.
Funeral service will be 12pm Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 340 Calhoun St., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hours will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be at Ewing Cemetery, Ewing, NJ. Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home.
