Deloris R. Leonard Obituary

Deloris R. (Winkler) Leonard, 89, of Trenton, New Jersey, departed her life on June 28, 2026 at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, with two of her children by her side. Deloris was born September 16, 1936 to the late Minnie Winkler and Herbert Russell in Harlem NYC, New York.

Deloris, was affectionately known as Delores/Dolores or Dee to family and friends. She accepted God as her Savior at an early age. She has practiced several denominations, notably attending Mosque #7 with Malcom X & Dr. Betty Shabazz. She was later baptized at Friendship Baptist Church of Trenton, NJ. Deloris spent her early years in Harlem, USA and was educated in the New York City Public School System. She has held a variety of jobs, most notably as owner/operator of Dee's Market.

Deloris was blessed with four children, Arvetta, Wayne, Michael & Jacqueline. April 12, 1959, Dee married the love of her life, Jimmy, after a whirlwind four month romance. They were later blessed with two additional daughters, Cynthia (Vicky) and Belinda. Dee was known as trailblazer, While many women in the late 1960's/early 70's were housewives, Dee was working as an assistant manager at a major department store. She later opened her own neighborhood grocery store, Dee's Market. She was also very crafty. She used to monogram (manual embroidery) clothing, bed/bath linen, and her children walked around with everything personalized. She loved working with flowers. After raising their children, they became avid RV travelers, traveling all across the USA for years. She was an active member of both Good Sam and Lucky 13 RV travel clubs. She was loved by many.

Deloris was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jimmy L. Leonard (four months later); parents, Minnie and Junious Barnes, Herbert Russell; brothers William, Roger, Raymond, Preston and Oliver Barnes; sisters Martha Headley and Audrey Reid, newborn daughter Shreene and newborn grandson Ronald.

She leaves behind to cherish seven children: Arvetta Mann, Wayne Winckler (Barbara), Michael Winkler, Jacqueline Anderson, Cynthia Victoria Bland, Belinda Leonard-Judd (Michael) and H. James Weidlich (Juliet), twenty-five grandchildren, several great grands and one great-great grandbaby; two sisters: Michelle Green and Olivia Barnes; one brother: Gerald Barnes; special niece Barbara Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

 

 

Funeral service will be 10am Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 340 Rev. S. Howard Woodson Jr. Way, Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hour will be 9am until the time of service at the church. Interment will be at Ewing Cemetery, Ewing, NJ.
