Edward Harris was born May 13, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Luella Harris and Clifford Hughes. He was educated in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Schenley High School. He continued his education at Tuskegee Institute, Rutgers University, Penn State University, and Drexel University where he obtained degrees from all.
Edward dedicated his life to service. He served in the United States Air Force. He was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen known as the Lonely Eagles Report. He was a former bomber pilot and flew over 150 missions in Korea. He carried the nickname given by is fellow comrades, "Skipper". Edward served in to wars: Korean War in the 1950's and World War II. On March 1, 1970, Edward was Honorably Discharged at the ranking of Lieutenant Colonel. Edward's love for planes turned in to a hobby of making model planes in his leisure time.
Edward was a hardworking man and gained employment with the State of
New Jersey Community Affairs as the Director of Training & Certification
uniform construction code office.
Edward continued his service in his community. He was a visionary for the development of the Hollowbrook Center in Ewing, New Jersey.
On July 29, 2020 at home in Ewing, New Jersey, God called Edward to eternal rest at the age of 95. His life has been full and he has accomplished much, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him greatly.
In addition to his parents, Edward was predeceased by two sisters, Rosemary Francis (Alfonso) and Lucille Harris; and one brother, Ernest Harris.
He leaves behind to cherish his fond memories: his loving wife of 69 years, Deloris Harris; two devoted goddaughters, Carolyn Lowe and Phyllis Hollingshead; five nieces, Bernadette Washington,Jean Gale Peoples, Patricia Daniel, Deborah Martin, and Donna Ferguson; three nephews, Robert Peoples, James Washington, and Kevin Harris; one sister-in-law, Rosemary
Harris; a special cousin, Otis King,Jr.; a special friend,Jessie Grier; and a host of other relatives and friends he has met along his journey.
