Freddie "Fred" Walton Greene entered this world on New Years Day 1953 in Princeton, New Jersey to a very proud Vivian and Harrison Greene, and spent his childhood there.
Freddie was a graduate of Trenton Central High School Class of 1972. He attended Chamberlayne Community College in Boston, Massachusetts. He spent most of his career as an accomplished chef at several upscale restaurants and country clubs including: The Peacock Inn, Green Acres and Cherry Valley Country Club. He catered various events including: wedding receptions, barbecues, and private parties. He spent the second part of his career as the Director of Transportation for Head Start (all of the children and his colleagues loved him)! As a matter of fact, Fred, never met an enemy. His kind, humble, gentle and generous spirit would not allow it. Fred was smart, witty and fun. Fred loved going to the cinema and could spend a day at The Cineplex.
Fred loved music and enjoyed a wide range of genres, from classical to jazz, R&B, gospel, blues and beyond. He played a number of instruments beautifully, guitar, flute, harmonica and most recently the keyboard. Fred loved to sit on his front porch, a big wraparound, during warm weather listening to his windchimes and playing his instruments to the delight of neighbors and passerby in the evening. Unfortunately, no recording exists, it was that good!
Fred was also part of the Capital Singers of Trenton, not as a singer, but part of the 'Fifth Voice' in support of his partner, Mary, a longtime member. Fred was at most rehearsals sitting quietly in the rear of the sanctuary reading his chess books, and challenging himself on the chessboard. He never missed a concert, welcoming the audience and enjoyed the performance immensely. He holds the distinction of being the only non-professional guest conductor to conduct a song at a Christmas concert and was presented with the honorary Conductor's baton. Fred loved photography and took many photos.
Fred loved the game of chess and was quite good at it. Known throughout Trenton as a formidable opponent that the 'old school chess crowd' were never able to beat. He enjoyed sharing/teaching his skills and techniques to younger people.
He is predeceased by his parents, and cousins John, Sandra and Carl Locklear. He is survived by Mary Malloy, his life partner of almost 30 years, Jamele Greene, his son, and brother Harrison Jr. Longtime friends Bobby, Diane, Ahmad Mansur and Rose.
He also leaves to mourn adopted family nieces: Maija Whitfield and Selah Kamau, and nephew, Reuel Kamau. Reuel made a delicious birthday cake for his last birthday. Many relatives and friends who will miss him.
He will never be forgotten. When you witness the goodness in this world, say his name.
Funeral service will be 12pm Thursday, April 3, 2025 at Trinity Cathedral, 801 W. State St, Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hour will be 11am until the time of service. Interment will be private.
