George Thomas Washington, was born November 13, 1938 to Booker T. Washington and Australia Washington in Modest Town, Virginia. In 1958 he met and married Dorothy Marie Drummond and together they raised their eight children. He was affectionally called "Shorty, or Jake" by family and friends, the man with the warm smile and infectious laugh, was the sunrise and sunset of his family. Getting up before sunrise to go to work, and coming home before the sunset in the evening to spend time with his family. When George wasn't working, he would go hunting, or fishing, and shared whatever he caught with friends and neighbors. He enjoyed going to New Egypt and Columbus flea markets every Sunday with his wife, no matter the weather. We called this their date day.
When his health started failing, he retired from Reed Sod Farm after 45 years of employment. George was not a man of many words, but when the Atlanta Braves lost a game, you could hear him yelling from outside, and if he yelled at you, you knew he meant business. Anyone needing a place to stay, food to eat, or clothes, he and his wife provided without a second thought.
He was predeceased by: his wife Dorothy Washington; son Larry Washington; grandson Rahmee Rogers; daughter Lynette Washington; granddaughter Angel Jones; his parents Booker T. and Australia Washington; parents-in-law: Isaac and Mary Drummond; brothers William, Leroy, Albert, Lynwood, and Rudolph Washington; sisters Rebecca Bell, Carrie Goodman, Joetta Fisher, Novella Shreives, and Pansy Bloxom; 2 brothers-in-law, 5 sisters-in-law.George's memory will be cherished and forever remembered by his sons George T. Washington, Jr. (Pat), Tracy Washington and Brian Washington; daughters Robin Washington, Gwendolyn Nelson and Nancy Washington; 17 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; sister Sally Edwards; brother Booker T. Washington; sisters-in-law Hortense (Herbert) Smith, and Nellie Drummond; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
