Georgia B. Dowdell Obituary

Georgia Dowdell the matriarch of her family, "Nana" to those who knew and loved her. She was a true blessing in all of their lives. Born September 13, 1937 in Wilmington, North Carolina, Pender County. She was educated in the Pender County school system.

Georgia moved to Trenton, New Jersey in 1962, where she resided until being called home, December 29, 2025.

She worked 30 years for New Method Cleaners until her retirement. Georgia joined Wayne Avenue Baptist Church of Trenton on January 1992 under the leadership of Reverend Daniel Evans, and then later under the Rev. Nathaniel Benjamin. Where she served as a faithful member, as a Senior Missionary and the

Women's Ministry. In addition to attending service regularly. Georgia loved helping others, she loved cooking for her family, bowling, going to the beach, movie theaters and shopping.

Later in June 2020 she moved her fellowship to New Salem Baptist Church led by Rev. Ernest "Skip" Wormley Jr, where she was loved by many. Especially Monica Wormley, who referred to her as her church mother. Also, Pastor Wormley nicknamed her and two of her closest friends, "Three the hard way".

She was predeceased by her parents Harrison and Lucy Batts; her spouse James Dowdell; her siblings Lizzie Wright, Mary Andrews, Louis Batts, Thomas Batts, John Batts, Edward Batts; her two sons Kenneth Jerry Batts and Jimmy Dowdell; her granddaughter Tina Batts; in-laws Marjorie Miller, Walter Dowdell (Delores), Frederick Barnes, Avance Jones Jr.; her special friend Sister Lou.

Georgia's memory will be cherished and forever remembered by her sister Esther Brown of Wilmington, NC; her children Deacon John Nelson Batts (Missionary Sonia Batts) of Trenton, NJ, Grace A. Smith (Undray L. Smith I) of Trenton, NJ; her stepchildren Timmy Dowdell, Anthony Dowdell, Tracey, Delores "Dee Dee", Kirby Jones, Delores Smith, and Alvance Jones; grandchildren Sequese Batts, Undray L. Smith II, Kashawn Batts, John J. Batts, Jana Batts, Najee, and Jamere Jenkins all of Trenton, NJ; two great grandchildren Shyheim Batts and Te'Quan Johnson, 19 additional great grandchildren all of Trenton, NJ; her dear friends Betty Fowler, Mary Collins, Barbara Nixon, Barbara Evans, Mary Edwards, Big John, Ms. Vickey and Tina Bailey all of Trenton, NJ; a host nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and her New Salem Baptist Church family.

 

Funeral service will be 11am Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at New Salem Baptist Church, 316 Union St., Trenton, NJ 08611. Calling hours will be 9am until the time of service at the church. Interment will be at Colonial Memorial Park, Trenton, NJ.
