Gracie Lee Montgomery, daughter of the late George King and Thelma Lockhart Sellers, departed this life on Saturday April 18, 2026. she passed away at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center at the age of 89.
Born in Wadesboro, North Carolina, she was the eldest of four girls. Growing up in North Carolina Gracie was surrounded by many cousins, aunts, and uncles. She attended schools in Anson County until the end of 8ih grade. In 1951, she relocated to Princeton, New Jersey and completed her high school education at Princeton High.
While attending Princeton High, Gracie met Robert Montgomery, an All-American athlete who, unbeknownst to her, would become her future husband.
Following graduation, Gracie worked with New Jersey Bell (A Bell Atlantic Company), currently known as Verizon. During her employment, she worked in different divisions of the company. She started in Princeton as an operator, moved to investigations, and eventually landed in drafting. Gracie worked with the company in many locations throughout New Jersey including, New Brunswick, Ewing, Trenton, and Cranford. In recognition of her dedication, she received a Superior Achievement award for having more than 25 years of perfect attendance. Gracie was employed for 37 years and made many lifelong friends.
Gracie married her high school sweetheart Robert Montgomery on October 8, 1960. They later moved to Ewing and had one daughter, Monica. She was an active member of St. John's Baptist Church for many years and served as Chaplin of the Senior Ushers. She was also a member of the Flower Club and served as President for many years.
A resident of Ewing for more than 60 years, Gracie was very active in her community right up until her health declined. She loved being around people and working with the community to preserve and improve the neighborhood. Naturally, Gracie engaged the community and became involved with A Committee for a Better Ewing. Her participation in civic work continued to grow over the years with the Ewing Park/ Brae Burn Civic Association, where she held several positions: President, Vice President and most recently, Treasurer until 2024.
Gracie was a hard worker but also liked to have fun. She enjoyed attending events and forming social connections with other members of the community and joined the Ewing Hollowbrook Seniors in her later years.
Gracie was predeceased by her husband Robert D. Montgomery, parents George K. Sellers and Thelma Lockhart Sellers, and sisters, Dorothy J. Still, Esther V. Sellers, and Betty J. Sellers.
A gentle soul with a fighting spirit, Gracie leaves to mourn one daughter and son-in-law Monica Aguele (Atose) of Cape Town, South Africa; four grandchildren: Aimisi Aguele, Esivie Aguele, Edia Aguele and Emade Aguele - all of Cape Town, South Africa; two nephews, Tab A. Still of Trenton, Raymond L. Still of West Hartford; goddaughter Camille Carthan and a host of cousins, family and friends
Funeral service will be 11am Monday, May 11, 2026 at St. John's Baptist Church, 70 Oregon Ave., Ewing, NJ 08638. Calling hours will be 9am until the time of service at the church. Interment will be at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick Twp., NJ.
