Hattie J. Gilliard, born on November 2, 1932 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Clarence and Hytha Gilliard. She was educated in the Hamilton Township School System. She was a graduate of Hamilton High School West. Hattie was employed as an original staff member of the J.O. Wilson Center in Hamilton. She was a Corrections Officer at the Mercer County Jail, where she retired after 20 years of service and became a foster parent working for DYFS for over 35 years. Hattie was a member at Saint Phillips Baptist Church in her early years and she also attended Shiloh Baptist Church in her later years.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father Clarence and Hytha Gilliard; her soulmate William H. Poindexter; her sons Daryl, Donald and Calvin Wilson; her brothers Georgia (Boy) Carnell, Robert Charles Ray Gilliard and William Rice; her sister Catherine Rice-Brown; two sisters-in-law Ruth Rice and Marian E. Gilliard.
Hattie’s memory will be cherished and forever remembered by her children Authur Wilson (Phyllis Jean), Cheryl A. Mendenhall of Yardley, PA, Hakeem (Sarian), Sabre and Connor Gilliard; sister-in-law Joan Gilliard; brother-in-law Walter Brown; grandchildren William H. Mendenhall of Yardley, PA, Daryl Wilson Jr. of Florida, Shannon Wilson of Texas, Dayshawn, Tayshawn Wilson both of Trenton, NJ and Solomon Gilliard; daughter-in-law Sally Wilson; two very special friends Donald “Big D” McLeon of Hamilton Township, NJ and Margaret Dingle of Hamilton Township, NJ (her friend for over 57 years); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 11am Thursday, June 23, 2022 at Hughes Funeral Home, 324 Bellevue Ave., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hours will be 9am until the time of service. Interment will be at Princeton Memorial Park, Robbinsville, NJ.
