It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hoover Steward, Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and proud Army veteran, who passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025 at the age of 87.
Jr, as he was affectionately called by his family, was born on October 3, 1937, to the late Hoover St. and Missouri Steward, in Colleton County, South Carolina Hoover proudly answered the call to serve his country with honor and courage. He enlisted in the United States Army on April 5, 1960, and served as a Waksman (Rifle and Carbine) until his honorable discharge on April 17, 1962. During his two years of dedicated service, both at home and overseas, Hoover exemplified the values of duty and commitment to his country. His time in uniform was a meaningful and defining chapter in his life, one he carried with pride.
Hoover was a dedicated and talented general contractor who took great pride in his craft. He owned and operated his own business, H. Steward & Sons, for over 40 years, and also worked alongside other contractors including Johnson's Plumbing & Heating and AK Contractors, throughout his career. Known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and attention to detail, Hoover approached every project with care. His work left a lasting mark on the community, and he earned the trust and respect of all who hired him. Even after retiring, many continued to seek out his expertise, a testament to the quality of his work and the relationships he built over the years.
Hoover loved spending time with family and friends, whether it was going out to eat, taking road trips, or just chilling with family and friends. He especially enjoyed relaxing by the water and casting a line at his favorite fishing spots. Some of his best memories were made during family vacations in Maryland and South Carolina, where he cherished the time spent with those he loved most.
In addition to his parents, Hoover was also preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Steward, a son, Jerome Littlejohn, four grandchildren, Johnathan Jr., and Jeremy Steward, Tyron Scott, and Tyanna Miller; two brothers, Russell and Bennie Jenkins), Gerald Steward, two sisters, Faye Stephens and Louise Shirley Jenkins (the late
He leaves to cherish his memory, two sons, Jonathan Steward (Susan) of Pine Tops, NC, Gerald Miller of Easton, PA; six daughters, Patricia Rose (Preston) of Fairlawn, NJ, Rozetta "Kim" Steward of Delaware, Lisa Hamilton (Corey) of Ewing, NJ, Tara Neal of Georgia, Darlene Miller of Newark, NJ, and Uraina Steward of Mount Dora, FL; three sisters, Hattie Johnson of Coatesville, PA, Phyllis Mathis (the late Robert Mathis) and Maryann Johnson (the late Eddie Johnson), of Smoaks, SC, 32 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, a special niece, Barbara Inman, a special nephew, Kenneth Jenkins Sr., and his extended family, the Covington, Jones, Neal, Miller, and Murray families, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Though he has departed this earthly life, Hoover's legacy of love and courage lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him, and his spirit rests peacefully in the presence of the Lord.
Funeral service will be 11am Friday, June 13, 2026 at Ministerios Fraternidad Cristiana, 715 Bellevue Ave., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hour will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be Ewing Cemetery, Ewing, NJ.
