Jean E. Banks Obituary

Jean Banks was born in Richmond, Virginia, and graduated from Armstrong High School, where she was voted Class Poet. She was baptized at New Bridge Baptist Church in Bungalow City (Richmond, VA), and as a young adult, she sang with the choir at Asbury Methodist Church. After moving to Princeton, New Jersey, Jean transferred her membership to Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, where she was an active and devoted member. She served faithfully on one of the Women's Circles and held the position of President for two years.

Jean later met and married the love of her life, John Banks (deceased). The two settled in Trenton, New Jersey, where they began their life together. Jean pursued her passion for helping others by earning her Practical Nurse's License from Mercer County Vocational School and St. Francis Hospital, graduating at the top of her class. Her academic excellence was recognized when her photo and achievements were featured in the local newspaper. She continued her education at Mercer County Community College, where she earned an Associate Degree in

Applied Science with a minor in Accounting. During her time there, she was nominated to Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges and received a Certificate of Achievement.

Jean joined the Elks in 1957 and served faithfully for the rest of her life. Over the years, she held numerous elected positions, including Daughter Ruler of Alice M. Shorter Temple #1029, Loyal Daughter Ruler for Trinity Council, and Trustee for Rising Sun Temple. She was a proud member of both the Past State Presidents Club and the New Jersey Past Grand Daughter Ruler Circle. Jean also served three years as an Auditor in the Grand Temple and ten years as Grand District Deputy for the Third District Council, Rising Sun Temple #119, and Pride of Trenton #774.

Her dedication extended to many departments within the organization, including Human Relations (where she served as both Directress and Treasurer), Fire & Safety, Courtesy, Education, Beauty and Talent, the Fez Club, and the Spelling Bee Department. She also contributed her expertise as an Auditor. Although Jean was deeply involved and accomplished, she preferred to work quietly behind the scenes, leaving the spotlight for others.

Jean is survived by her beloved daughter, Glynis Willoughby(Roger Tyler); her "bonus" children, whom she lovingly cared for as her own-sons Tyrone Carter and David Hoagland, and daughter Allison Hoagland; three grandchildren, Chyanne Willoughby, Christina Duncan, Micheal Duncan and the late Chantel "Niki" Duncan; and two great-grandchildren, Ishmael Bennett and Jala Bennett. Though an only child, Jean shared a sisterly bond with her dear friend, Lorraine Sweat and Sister-in-Law Mary Banks whom she also leaves to cherish her memory.

Jean Banks will be remembered for her faith, service, humility, and love for family and community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
