Jerry Lee Powell

Deacon Jerry Lee Powell, age 68, peacefully entered eternal rest on June 6, 2026. Born on January 2, 1958, in Tabor and his community. City, North Carolina, Jerry accepted Christ at an early are and devoted his life to serving God, his family, his church.

Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved parents. Irene Powell Ford and Rufus Smith; and his cherished the man he became grandparents, Henry Roland, Eulah Bell Smith, and Carie Coit, whose love, guidance, and influence helped shape the man he became.

A man of unwavering faith, Jerry united with Saint Phillips Baptist Church on September 30, 2012, under the leadership of Dr. Joseph E. Woods where he remained a faithful, devoted, and active member of the church: In recognition of his steadfast service and commitment to God's Work, Jerry was ordained into the Diaconate on November 22, 2024. He faithfully served as a Deacon, sang in the choir, and participated wholeheartedly in the life and ministry of the church. His love for God's word was evident through his passion for studying the Bible and sharing its wisdom with others.

Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Private First Class with Unit 364 Supply and Service at Fort Bragg. Following his military service, he dedicated his life to helping and uplifting young people. A graduate of Trenton Central High School, Class of 1977, and the Camden County Police Academy, Jerry built a distinguished career mentoring youth and young adults.

He served for 11 years at the Mercer County Youth Detention Center until its closure. He then continued his work at Family Transitional Support Services, where he spent 15 years as an Associate Director and Counselor, making a lasting impact on countless young lives. Later, he worked at the Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf for two years until illness forced his retirement.

Known affectionately as "JPMoney," Jerry never met a stranger. He possessed a bubbly spirit, a quick wit, and an infectious smile and laugh that could brighten any room. He was truly "that guy" - the person everyone loved. A hard worker, trusted mentor, and positive role model, Jerry dedicated himself to guiding young men and boys toward brighter futures. His compassion, encouragement, and genuine care left an enduring mark on countless lives.

Jerry cherished spending quality time with his family and church family. He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and proudly claimed blue as his favorite color. In his leisure time, he enjoyed singing, shooting pool, and sharing laughter with those around him. His warm personality, infectious smile, and joyful spirit made every gathering brighter.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 32 years, Sandra Powell; three devoted sons, Terrence Powell (Chastity), Michael Powell Sr., and Sean Powell; two cherished grandchildren, Terrence Powell I and Saviour Powell; his beloved brother, Larry Smith (Tammy); brothers-in-law, Erek Rogers (Saffiyah) and Vincent Rogers (Carmen); sisters-in-law, Beverley Davis and Carolyn McCoy (Robert); Brother-Uncle Ervin Smith; Brother-Cousin Frank Soles; beloved godchildren, Nelson Zayas and Heaven Bryant; his devoted best friend, Joe Henderson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and love.

Though Jerry's earthly journey has ended, the legacy of his faith, service, mentorship, and love will continue to shine through the many lives he impacted. His bright light, loving spirit, and unwavering devotion to God, family, and community will never be forgotten.

Funeral service will be 11am Friday, June 26, 2026 at St. Phillips Baptist Church, 445 Parkinson Ave., Trenton, NJ 08610. Calling hour will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be 10am Monday, June 29, 2026 at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
