John Grier Obituary

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend and Mentor John Wesley Grier Jr. passed away at home surrounded by his family on July 2, 2020.

John Wesley Grier Jr. was born on March 19, 1930 to the late Lottie Bell Grier and John Wesley Grier Sr. in Cuthbert, Georgia, he was the only child of this union. The Grier family relocated to Trenton, NJ in 19 33, planting their roots on Dunham Street and becoming one of the 1st Black families in the area. John gave his parents a run for their money! He was anxious, very independent and at the age of 15 decided he was grown enough to start his independent life. Leaving home, John enlisted in the Anny in 1945 where he crafted his truck driving and heavy equipment operator skills. He served 2 years, completing one tour and was honorably discharged in 1947. John retun1ed to Trenton, NJ in his early 20's a well-rounded skilled young 1nan, obtained his COL A and started his career as a long-distance truck driver. He was a lifelong men1ber of the Tea111sters Union and worked for various trucking companies. His love for traveling and the open road brought him to different states throughout the country. This le d to him being very well-known and respected. One of his favorite pastimes was spending time with friends playing pool and gambling. John can also be remembered for his witty outspoken nature. A slick mouth that could talk anyone out of their shoes.

With this same cham1, he attracted his longti1ne wife Marie, 1nerging their fa1nilies together; Fletcher, son of John, and Marie 's daughters Roxanne and Johnnie Marie. They built together a successful family- oriented life in Pennsylvania and welcomed two more children Gina and John Grier Ill. While living in Morrisville, John successfully managed Joseph's Bar and Lounge as well as owning his own trucking company, John & Son's. John and his family lived a fulfilled life until his wife's passing in December 2017.   John believed he would be granted a pass into heaven off of Marie's prayers. However, Marie would say "John I can't pray you into Heaven you have to pray for yourself." These words stayed with John and he began 10 pray with family and friends. 

He ascends to heaven to reunite with his Wife, Marie, Mother, Lottie Bell, Father, John Wes ley Sr., his Eldest Son, Fletcher and loved ones.

John leaves behind  his  four children,  Roxanne  White,  Johnnie Marie Jackson, Gina  Rivers,  Son-In-Law, Alton, John W. Grier Ill, Daughter-In-Law Cynthia, twelve grandchildren, several great-grandchildren , a host relatives, his last surviving best bud Bo Didley and countless other friends.
