"He's gone!" A loving father, husband, and friend. On May 31, 2022, God plucked another flower from the garden of the living and placed him in His garden where there is no pain, sadness, or strife. What more appropriate words could express his passing and feeling of loss yet a sense of relief.
John William Sapp, son of the late Johnnie W. and Leola Sapp was born November 12, 1950, in Trenton, New Jersey. He departed this Earth on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the Capital Health Center Hopewell He was a lifelong resident of Trenton, New Jersey where he attended the Trenton Public Schools until 8th grade and then completed his education at St. Mary's Cathedral High School, in Trenton where he graduated in 1969. John's high school years were highlighted by his role as a basketball star at Cathedral High. He and his team played many spirited games against their rivals Trenton Central High School Upon graduation, John attended Elizabeth City State University (formerly known as, Elizabeth City College).
After leaving Elizabeth City College, John returned to Trenton where he worked at United Progress Inc. (UPI) and subsequently started his career when he joined the Trenton Police Department in 1973 where he served for 20 years. Upon leaving the Trenton Police Department, John worked at Educational Testing Services (ETS), and Princeton University Security Department where he retired in 2021.
John was a member of Galilee Baptist Church in Trenton, B.O.L.E.S. Police Organization and in his youth, was a member of the Theta Gama Fraternity.
He was predeceased by his paternal & maternal grandparents: Dock Sr. and Florence Sapp and James & Amanda Simmons, brother Gary J. Sapp, uncles: Dock, Sr., Homer, Elijah, David and Vincent; aunts: Ella Rambough, Florence Watts, and Essie and Ida Sapp and cousins: Derrick Sapp, Geraldine Watts, Craig Sapp.
He is survived by his wife: Sylvia Sapp; his son: Harun F. Sapp; stepson: Lino A. Rosario, five grandchildren: Jamir Brown, Arial Thompson-Sapp, Ramaaj Sapp and Elijah Rosario all of Trenton, NJ and Harun N. Sapp and his only great-grandson: Ace Sapp of Raleigh, NC. John cherished his only surviving aunts: Lil and Gloria Sapp; only nephew: Damien T. Sapp. and a host of cousins. John's love for children left no room for neglect to any of his step-grandchildren, so he was known as "Pop-Pop" to them all. He was a friend to so many it is impossible to name them both here and in heaven. God knew he was tired and heard his prayers. So, He gave John his wings and he was reunited with the many family and friends.
Funeral service will be 1pm Friday, June 10, 2022 at ​Galilee Baptist Church, 440 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Trenton, NJ 08618. . Callings hour will be 12pm until the time of service. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton NJ. Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home.
