Johnnie R. Mathis

Johnnie R. Mathis was born on April 2, 1956 in Clinton, North Carolina. He departed this life peacefully at the age of 69 on April 6, 2025 at Capital Health System, Trenton. Educated in the Clinton School System, he attended Clinton High School where he was a star basketball player. Johnnie was recognized for his notable service in basketball at Clinton High School and was chosen as a member of the Southeastern AAA All Conference squad.

He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree from Winston Salem State father Elton R. Mathis, Sr. University. At 27 years of age, Johnnie moved to Trenton, New Jersey to live with his
Johnnie worked for the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles. He was promoted to a supervisory position and retired in 2015 after 34 years of service.

Johnnie faithfully served for many years as a dedicated member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he was a valued member of the Deacon Board. Prior to becoming a Deacon, he served on the Board of Trustees, acted as the Spiritual Advisor for the Macedonia Inspirational Voices and was actively involved n the Macedonia Baptist Union of Trenton and Vicinity. Johnnie loved watching NBA and College basketball games, and also enjoyed Major League Baseball

Johnnie is predeceased by his grandparents Arthur and Carrie Mae Mathis, his father, Elton R. Mathis, Sr. and his sister, Sharon Kelsey.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother Lula Mathis brothers Elton R. Mathis, Jr., Anthony Aycock and Nathaniel Aycock, sisters Candace Mathis, Alice Nelson (Spencer), Eunice Lewis, Carolyn Broadney (Dwayne), Tura McWhite and Tina Brannon, special nieces Jacqueline Mathis, Kendra Worthy and Erykah Mathis, nephews D'Andre Mathis, Noah Mathis and Michael Charles, uncles Howard Mathis and Milford Oates of Clinton, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and Macedonia Church Family.

Funeral service will be 11am Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at Macedonia Baptist Church, 1300 Greenwood Ave., Trenton, NJ. Calling hours will be 9am until the time of service at the church.  Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton, NJ.
