Joseph David Reed

Joseph David Reed was born on March 1, 1959, in Newark, New Jersey, to James and Johanna Reed. He was raised in Orange, New Jersey, in a loving Christian home where faith and service shaped every part of life. His parents opened their hearts and home to many children through adoption and foster care, creating a family where love, not lineage, defined belonging.

Joe attended Park Avenue Elementary, Orange Middle, and Orange High School, graduating in 1977. He later attended Kean University (formerly Kean College) and earned certifications in business management, marketing, and interior design.

Gifted with an extraordinary eye for fashion and design, Joe built a successful career in New York City’s fashion and home design industries. As a buyer, stylist, and consultant for both private and high-profile clients, he became known for his impeccable taste, warmth, and care. He had a rare gift for connection and persuasion — a natural ability to make everyone feel valued and confident.

Joe loved good food, Broadway theater, movies, travel, and dancing. His joy for life was infectious, and his laughter lit every room. Above all, Joe’s greatest love was his faith in God. Ordained an Elder in 1994 under Bishop Jeff Banks at Revival Temple, he served faithfully in ministry and music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Johanna Reed; his brother, James Reed II; and sisters Wanda Lorraine and Vanessa Arlene Reed.

He is survived by his sisters, Sadie Mickle (Booker) and Maureen Reed Gerald (Kevin); his nephews and nieces Kevin Arnold, James Reed III, Sean Hood, Waseem Hood, Johanna Davison, Makenzi Sumners, Madison Sumners, and Jaznikah Reed; a host of great-nieces and great-nephews; and many foster and adopted siblings. Among them, Paula Holt, Pauline Holt, Tyree Reed, Tashe’ Reed, & Kareem Peppers. And among a host of life long friends is Reginald Robert, who journeyed with Joe until his transition.

Joe’s legacy is one of faith, beauty, and light. His life will forever remind us of the divine power and influence we have to transform any room with God’s love.

 

Funeral service will be 12pm Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Revival Temple Holiness Church, 81 16th Ave., Newark, NJ 07103. Calling hour will be 11am until the time of service. Interment will be private.
