Kate L. Hayes

Kate Hayes, 86, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026, at Princeton Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. 

Born on September 19, 1938, in Hopewell, New Jersey, Kate was the beloved daughter of David Fitzgerald and Viola Hightower. She was educated in the Hopewell school system and carried with her throughout life a strong work ethic and deep sense of care for others. 

Kate dedicated many years as a housekeeper before continuing her career with Johnson & Johnson, Circle F, and General Motors, where she faithfully worked until her retirement after 10 ears of service. 

A devoted woman of faith, Kate was a cherished member of Macedonia Baptist Church for over 40 years. During her time there, she served in numerous roles, including Head of the Kitchen Committee, President of the Junior Usher Board, member of the Morning Star Chorus, Pastor's Aide Helping Hand Committee, and the Deaconess Board. Her commitment to her church was unwavering, and her presence was a source of strength and joy to her church family. 

Kate found happiness in the simple, meaningful moments of life. She enjoyed knitting and, above all, treasured the time she spent with her family and her extended church community. 

She was preceded in death by her mother, Viola Hightower; her sister, Lizzie Mae Hightower; her brother, Obey Lee Hightower; and her two sons, Nelson Hightower and Terrence Hayes Jr. 

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 61 years, Terrence Hayes Sr. of Cranbury, New Jersey; her children, Sherry Alexander (Sylvestor) of Trenton, New Jersey, Theresa Rainer of Hamilton NJ, Sherman Hendryx (Lisa) of Hamilton, New Jersey, and Brian Hendryx (Janine) of Raleigh, North Carolina; her dear friends, Jean and James Billups; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. 

Kate's life was one of service, love, and quiet strength. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her.

Funeral service will be 11am Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at Macedonia Baptist Church, 1300 Greenwood Ave., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hour will be 10am until the time of service at the church.  Interment will be private.
