Leonard Welesley Cummings

It was Friday, February 21, 2025 when Leonard, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, decided to leave this earthly life for a heavenly one.

Leonard Welesley Cummings was born July 18, 1931 in the Parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica, the third child of Adina and James Cummings. Leonard, affectionately known as "Uncle Papa" to family and friends, was a resident of Ewing for 33 years.

After leaving Caledonia School, he earned his living as a carpenter, construction worker and later as a maintenance person. He continued in maintenance when he emigrated to the United States in 1984 working in the Facilities Department of Westminster Choir College and later at Rider University, retiring from there in 1997.

Uncle Papa was affable with a cheery disposition and a sense of humour. He was not excitable but generated much excitement with his telling of "old time stories". A talented guitar and banjo player, he loved calypso music, watching cowboy westerns and tinkering with anything and everything around the house.

Leonard is survived by wife Pansy, his beloved companion of 77 years, children George Cummings, Cedric Cummings, Claudette Rodway, Keith Cummings (Diana), Audrey Chin (Paul), Yvonne Cummings, Janett Guthrie (Michael), 19 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Also left to mourn his loss are his dear sister Myrtle (Auntie Vie) Morgan, sister-in-law Sylvia Cummings, sister-in-law Patricia (Aunt Elsa) Burnett, brother-in-law Kenneth "PaJohn" Cunningham and an extended group of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service will be 11am Friday, March 21, 2025 at Mt. Sinai Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 35 Arlington Ave, Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hour will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be at Ewing Cemetery, Ewing, NJ.
