Levi C. Powell Sr., son of the late Albert and Viola Wright-Powell, was born in Capeville, Virginia, on September 25, 1929. He departed this life on Wednesday, June 1,2022, at the Capital Health-Hopewell Campus in Pennington, New Jersey.
Levi received his education in the school system of North Hampton County, Virginia, and it is in this county that he met his future wife, Sarah Sample, whom he married in 1949. Five children were born into this union: Mercedes Powell, Olivia (Larry) Crossland, the late Levi C. Powell Jr., Mary Powell, and Thomas Powell.
Levi retired from Local 50, where he worked in construction for over forty years. During his life, pre and post-retirement, Levi immensely enjoyed gardening in his yard. He took great pride in his well-manicured lawn, which included a vibrant bloom of tulips and begonias that adorned his front yard annually, wowing neighbors and passersby.
Adding to his legacy as a revered presence and pillar of the community, Levi began to repair bicycles for the neighborhood children. He freely gave his time and resources to maintain their bikes and keep them functioning properly. Occasionally, he could be seen leading a procession of children on a bike ride up and down the street, with the kids affectionately referring to him as their "Uncle Levi."
