Mary Avery Obituary

Mary Lee Gloria Avery made her transition from Clover Meadows Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center to her Heavenly Home on Monday, November 15,2021. She was born in Hickory, North Carolina on July 29, 1924.

Mary was the only daughter born to the late Giles Derr and Florence Hunter Derr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Avery, her four brothers Roman, Andrew, James and Benjamin, and her grandson Zahib Tahir White.

In 1951 Mary’s husband James relocated from Hickory to Trenton, New Jersey. She followed with Ivey, their three-year-old daughter and began to work as a beautician. She worked for many years at Josephine’s Salon of Beauty on Princeton Avenue.

After the passing of her husband in 1970, she moved to Boston Massachusetts -from there to Milwaukee, Wisconsin-then back to Atlanta Georgia where she joined Wheat Street Baptist Church. While in Atlanta, she worked at Jamieson Shaw Hairdresser until she retired in 2000 and returned to Trenton to live with her daughter.

She was a devout and faithful Christian and a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Mary loved riding the bus and traveled to local malls on New Jersey Transit and occasionally travelled to Neshaminy Mall on S.E.P.T.A. While riding the bus she passed out cards with a spiritual

message. She called this her “unique ministry” and she enjoyed her calling immensely

She is survived by one daughter Ivey Chiquita Avery, great grandson Kyle Vanswol of Dallas Texas, first cousins, Gwendolyn Derr of Hickory, N.C. and Barbara Fish of Raleigh, N.C., special friend Sharon Gore of Trenton N.J. and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.
