Mary Alice Brown Whetstone, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Preferred Care in Ewing, NJ.
Mary was born in Philadelphia, PA to Arthur and Ida Brown. After Ida's passing, Arthur married Elouise and together they lovingly raised Mary and her brother, Leroy. She attended local Philadelphia public schools and was a proud graduate of West Philadelphia High School. She was a woman of deep faith, and in her youth, was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia under the leadership of Rev C W Gregory.
Mary was a devoted wife to George E. Whetstone Sr., and this union was blessed with three children: Elouise Lee Whetstone Vereen, George E. Whetstone Jr., and John Henry (who preceded her in death). A loving and dedicated mother and grandmother, Mary cherished time spent with her family. She was known for hosting lively family gatherings and dinners at her Spring St. home, where laughter and love filled the air.
Mary was a woman of many passions and interests. An avid reader and skilled writer, she possessed a lifelong love of learning. She was also a talented artist, finding joy in drawing, solving jigsaw puzzles, and listening to Gospel music. A woman of great ambition and independence, Mary enjoyed driving, traveling, and going on cruises. A longtime member of St. John's Baptist Church, Mary served as a missionary and sang with the Senior Choir. She worked diligently at Skillman and Trenton Psychiatric Hospital until her retirement. After many years in Lawrenceville, she moved to Preferred Care of Mercer, where she was elected President of the Residents' Council two years in a row.
Mary will be remembered for her warm smile, her loving spirit, and her unwavering commitment to her family and her faith.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents: Arthur, Ida, and Elouise; her husband, George Sr; her brother, Leroy; her son, John Henry; her daughter-in-law: Sandy Whetstone; her great-grandson: Darrol A. Lee Jr.
Mary's memory will be forever cherished by her children: Elouise Lee Vereen, George E. Whétstone Jr; her grandchildren: Tanya Doman, Donielle Whetstone, Pete Vereen (Dontia) Ericka Hughes (Karlton), Evie Smith, Candy Wesley (Roy), Aisha Whetstone (Terrence), Marques Vereen (Josie): her great-grandchildren: Dawaine (Milan), Tiana, Leon Jr, Cherelle, Dion, Petrell, Dionna (Keith), Isaiah, Gloria, Anaias, Malachi, Genesis, Kale, kli, Brandon, Braydon, Bryson, Maya; her sreat-great grandchidren: "Lavat. Dasean, Mikaela, Taliyah Winter. Pharoah, Skylar, Gianna, Nola and Leon; a special cousin Ann Gibbs; and a host of beloved family and friends whose lives she touched deeply.
Funeral service will be 11am Thursday, March 20, 2025 at St. John's Baptist Church, 70 Oregon Ave., Ewing, NJ 08638 . Calling hour will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton, NJ.
