Reuben Johnson, Sr.

Reuben Johnson, Sr., 81, passed away on December 19, 2025, at Carnegie Post-Acute Care in Princeton, New Jersey.

Born in Swainsboro, Georgia, Mr. Johnson later moved to Trenton, New Jersey, where he resided for 62 years. He completed his education through the eighth grade and went on to develop a strong work ethic and a dedicated career. He was employed as an assembler with General Motors in Ewing, New Jersey, where he worked for 16 years before taking early retirement in 1991.

An avid and accomplished golfer, Mr. Johnson made history as the first Black player to win the Metropolitan Trenton Amateur Championship. His success helped pave the way for future Mercer County Senior Open champions. He was also a proud member of the Capitol City Golf Club, a milestone that reflected both his exceptional skill and his role in breaking barriers within the sport.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Aldora Snell; his father, Gabriel Johnson; and his brother, Bishop Martin Luther Johnson, Sr.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Lorraine Johnson of Ewing, New Jersey; his sons, Ruben Johnson, Jr. (Naomi) of Yardley, Pennsylvania, and Harvey Moore (Winnie) of Birmingham, Alabama; his daughters, Marquita Rolling (James) of Willingboro, New Jersey, and Tykia Johnson of Greensboro, North Carolina; his brother, Lawyer Lee Johnson (Mildred) of Swainsboro, Georgia; his grandchildren, Ruben Johnson III, Camille Johnson, Kanikki Moore, Laquenette Moore, Tamara Moore, Dejuan Moore, Justin Johnson, Jada Rolling, James Rolling, Jr., and Jayce Rolling; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be 12pm Wednesday, January 7, 2026  at Hughes Funeral Home, 324 Bellevue Ave., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hours will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be at Fountain Lawn Memorial Park, Cemetery, Ewing, NJ.
