Rev. Fer Daniel Worthy Obituary

Fer Daniel Worthy was born on July 17, 1944, in Union, South Carolina, along Route 176, to the late Willie Mae Worthy-Hunter and Francis Meadow. He was one of two children, growing up alongside his younger brother, John Hunter, affectionately known as “Freddie.”

Daniel attended Red Hill Baptist Church in Union, South Carolina, as a child, where he developed a deep love for church revivals. Each year, no matter where life took him, he prioritized returning home for these powerful gatherings—drawn to the spirit-filled preaching, the sense of community, and the traditional worship that filled the sanctuary. The church never lost its down-home charm, where hand-held fans waved in rhythm, and foot-stomping became an instrument of praise, harmonizing with the heartfelt singing.

In 1954, his mother, Willie Mae Hunter, made the courageous decision to relocate the family to Trenton, New Jersey, seeking greater opportunities for her sons. Daniel attended Our Lady of the Divine Shepherd Catholic School before graduating from Trenton Central High School. On November 7, 1963, he enlisted in the United States Army Corps as an executive chef—a role that blended his discipline, creativity, and love for cooking. His years of service instilled an unshakable work ethic, and he was honorably discharged on April 27, 1978.

Daniel built a career in Trenton, first as a meter reader for the City of Trenton and later dedicating 30 years to Dwyer Brothers Office Supplies. Under the mentorship of Mr. James Dwyer, who became a father figure to him, Daniel was encouraged to pursue entrepreneurship. Inspired by this guidance, he opened his shoe shine and hat cleaning business on Warren Street, where he became a well-known figure in the community.

At the same time, Daniel felt a divine calling that led him to theology school and the path to ministry. Under the guidance of Pastor Sanders at Friendship Baptist Church, he sat humbly on the pulpit, learning from his mentor and deepening his understanding of the Word. He was installed as a pastor in several churches throughout Trenton, but God had another plan. His journey led him to Columbia and Baltimore, Maryland, where he became the Forest Park Senior Center Director. He dedicated himself to serving the community for twenty years, becoming a pillar of support, wisdom, and kindness.

Daniel’s work at the center became legendary, touching countless lives and leaving an indelible mark on the people he served. His impact was recognized through numerous honors, including the Shining Star Volunteer of the Year Award, the Unsung Hero Award, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Forest Park Senior Center, and a Certificate of Recognition from the City of Baltimore—just a few among the many accolades he received throughout his lifetime.

Though too numerous to list, each award stands as a testament to his dedication, service, and the profound difference he made in the lives of others.

In 2020, Daniel returned to Trenton due to illness. Despite his health struggles, he never complained. His independence was his pride, which he maintained for as long as his strength allowed. Even in his final days, his resilience and unwavering faith shone through.

Daniel was known as a sharp dresser in his youth, always in a suit, never missing a beat. Around the city, he was affectionately called “Dapper Dan.” He took immense pride in his appearance and was even featured in a commercial for Byers Clothing Store.

Daniel remained a devoted believer of great faith throughout his life. He reinstated his membership at Friendship Baptist Church, faithfully driving himself to service until he no longer could. Even then, Daniel remained connected—worshiping online with his headphones on, fully immersed in the sermon, shouting “Yes, sir!” and “Preach!” as if sitting in the front pew. He cherished Reverend Taylor’s sermons and found deep comfort in Deacon Evans ’prayers every first Sunday to share communion. His favorite gospel song, “Run On, See What the End’s Gonna Be,” reflected his perseverance and faith.

Beyond his ministry and career, Daniel was known for his sharp wit, humor, and wisdom. He was a natural storyteller, always teaching life lessons through laughter. Every conversation with him left you with a new perspective, a lesson learned, or a good chuckle.

Daniel was preceded in death by his mother, Willie Mae Worthy-Hunter, his father, Francis Meadow, and his brother, John Hunter.

He leaves a legacy of faith, service, and love, carried on by those who loved him dearly. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Danielle Miller Winrow and Dionne Kelley Worthy, along with his cherished grandchildren, Chandler Alexis Miller and Cameron Aiden Miller. His special friend, Yvonne Archer, held a meaningful place in his heart. He was also deeply grateful for the love and care of Sterick Ivey, Diane Dash-Thompson, Donald Thompson, Michael Coleman, Charles Watkins, Sakiyyah Darden, Sprout U School of the Arts students, Mercer County Community College’s officers, The Redding Senior Center, the doctors of Penn Medicine, and the specialists at Franklin Corner Road, as well as the doctors and nurses of Capital Health Systems.

A host of sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and an extended community of friends and loved ones will forever cherish his memory.

Daniel Worthy’s journey was one of faith, resilience, and unwavering dedication to those around him. His kindness, strength, and wisdom will live on in the hearts of all who are blessed to know hi
