Samuel Griffiths Obituary

Samuel Griffiths affectionately known as Sam, Mr. Sam, Brother Griffiths, dad, grandpa Uncle Sam, was born April 30, 1928 in Greenland, Hanover Parish, Jamaica West Indies. He was the first born of Joseph and Florence Griffiths, Samuel Griffiths received his early education at Green Island Primary School and then attended Green Island Secondary School.

A devoted member of the Church of Christ. Samuel, together with his devoted wife Gwendolyn Griffiths of 40 years was deeply involved in the church ministry. Their work extended beyond the sanctuary, as they frequently visited the sick and elderly, and provided domestic assistance to those in need. Known for bis wisdom and passion. He loved to teach, minister and study with individuals of all ages.

He worked as a care giver at Bellevue Hospital downtown Kingston Jamaica prior to migrating to England in 1962 where be worked for the Royal Mail Postal Service, before he moved to Trenton, New Jersey 1982, and was employed by Princeton University. then he met and married Gwendolyn Mendez.

After retiring, Samuel and Gwendolyn returned to Jamaica, where they had built a beautiful home. His return didn't mark a period of rest, rather he became an active contributor to his community, partnering with the Sandy Bay Church of Christ to aid in the construction of the new church building.

In 2006 the couple resettled in the United States, making this home in Richmond Virginia. ln 2023 Samuel and Gwendolyn returned to New Jersey, the place where their American journey began. Samuel never tired of his bible. always studying and planning lessons.

Samuel lived a life rooted in faith, love and purpose. He sadly passed away on October 28, 2025.

He now joins his wife Gwendolyn, his parents Joseph and Florence Griffiths and one sister.

He is lovingly remembered by son Donald (Avis) Griffiths of England, daughter Marva Griffiths-Brown of New York; stepdaughter Veronica (Mack) Gibson of Ewing; Stepson Richard (Cindy) Mendez of Kansas; grandchildren Evette Georgia Rollock, Marie Brown and Anthony Sandiford of New York, Carita Csompo, Norris (Shemet) Brown, Alex Brown of Jamaica, Deseren Emmanuel and Dwayne Griffiths of England, Mack (Talaya) Gibson Jr. of Burlington, Nicole Gibson, Charles Gibson of Ewing; great grandchildren Jon Michael Gray, Nafertari Wright, Nastasia Brown, Diana Hickling, Angelina Csaompo, Hendrix Csompo. Giovanni Heslop of New York, Jeremiah Gibson, NaZiah Gibson Mellodi Boldt of Ewing, Andrew Gentles, Leneisha Gayle, Sean Michael Brown. Nickora Brown, Novard Brown, Zane Brown of Jamaica; great-great grandson Amir Morrison of Jamaica.

 

Funeral service will be 11am Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Church of Christ, 411 North Clinton Avenue, Trenton, NJ 08638. Calling hour will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be at Fountain Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Ewing, NJ.
