Steven R. Rue

Steven "Steve" Anthony Rue died peacefully on June 19, 2025, in Trenton, New Jersey at the age of 59.

Steven was born on May 22, 1966 in Trenton, New Jersey to Elijah Rue and Doris (Rue) Hollis. He graduated from Trenton Central High School in 1984. He attended St. Paul AME Zion Church.

Steven worked for Jiffy Lube, Lawn Doctor of Princeton, The College of New Jersey, The State of New Jersey DYFS, and finally Trane Technologies in Hamilton New Jersey. Graduating from Culinary School was just one of the many milestones that showcased his passion and dedication. He approached life with resilience, especially in the face of adversity, teaching all what true strength looks like.

In 1991: Steven became the proud father to his only son Karel. His son remembers him for living life with heartwarming duality, blending strength with tenderness. He remembers his goofy jokes and warm hugs and his unique ability to make everyone feel like the most important person in the room. Whether he was sharing a hearty laugh or indulging in a good-natured rant after lending you money, his spirit always shone brightly.

Steven was predeceased by his father, Elijah Rue; his stepfather, William Hollis; his grandfather, Elijah "Pop" Rue; his grandmother, Doris E. Wright; his aunts and uncles, Patricia Clayborn, Mary Ann Stewart, Ianna Owens; and Edward Wright; and his godparents, Ronald and Carolyn Cooper.

Steven is survived by his mother, Doris Hollis of Trenton, New Jersey; his only son, Karel Rue of Trenton, New Jersey; a brother, William "Sporty" Hollis of Trenton, New Jersey; a sister, Denise Newman of Houston, Texas; treasured nieces and nephews, Leshaun, Keyanna, De’Marcus and Alexis; two aunts, Mabel Johnson and Jessie Wilson; an uncle, William "Little" Wright; godson, Giovanni Dubuisson; his loving partner and caregiver, Zakida Killingsworth; his best friends, Thurman "Junie" Leach and Darryll Dixon; and a host of cousins, colleagues and friends.

A Memorial service will be held at 11am Thursday, July 3, 2025 at Hughes Funeral Home, 324 Bellevue Ave., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hour will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be private.
