 Virginia Upshur Obituary

Virginia L. Upshur, 88, was born in North Hampton, Virginia on March 28, 1934, to the late Elizabeth A Fisher-Sturgis and the late Lilton Sturgis. Virginia was called to her heavenly home and departed this life peacefully on January 22, 2023, surrounded by her loved one’s in Trenton NJ where she was a life-long resident. She was one of 15 children and was preceded in death by her husband Charlie Ross Upshur, her daughter’s Betty Upshur and Angel Upshur, her sister’s Lucille Evans and Ann Fisher and her brother’s June Fisher, Tom Fisher, Cornell Fisher, Ronald Sturgis and Willis Sturgis.

Virginia was educated in the Northampton County school district. She was an amazing cook, and she mastered her craft and passed on her love for cooking to her family, children and grandchildren. She was also a beautician, and she was passionate about sewing, shopping, traveling and last but certainly not least dancing and listening to her “oldies” on her record player.

Virginia was known for dancing and was always the life of the party. There was no party without “Nana/ Aunt Brownie” which she was affectionately called. Virginia was such a loving and caring person, and she touched the lives of so many in the community and was always willing to help others even if she didn’t have much to offer and despite her own issues and illnesses… she made a way out of no way and for that she will never be forgotten. She had such a warm and loving heart, a bright smile and always had a word of encouragement for anyone she encountered. She had a very distinctive voice and laugh and her most joyous times were spent with her family and friends. The party that she is about to go have up in heaven when she reunites with her loved one’s is sure to be epic!

Virginia leaves behind to celebrate her life and memory her children: Charlie Ross Upshur Jr, Francene Upshur, Rudolph (Regina) Upshur, Lionel (Christina) Upshur Sr. and her God daughter Marlene Marshall.

Virginia has 27 grandchildren, 4 in particular of which she raised as her own: Kitta (Maurice), Elonna, Lynnel (Tiron), and Zay (Imani). She has 51 great grand children and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Her siblings: Francis Fisher, Billy Sturgis, Ronnie Sturgis, Peggie Giddens, Rosie Homes, Maddie White, Jenette Sturgis and Cordelia Sturgis. As well as a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephew, family and friends.

She also has a very special niece that she raised as her own Deborah Fisher and a very special daughter in law Millie (Fu) as well as her extended Austin family.
