Walter Perry Obituary

Trustee Walter Perry, transitioned from earth to heaven on Thursday, March 14, 2024 in Trenton, NJ.  He was born in Dawson, GA on August 18, 1937 to the late Lottie Bell (Perry) Hall and John Thomas Jackson.  He was raised in Parrott, Georgia by his grandmother, Lillie Perry.

Dood, as he was affectionately called by family and close friends, attended the Georgia Public School System and graduated from Carver High School in 1956.  After graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and upon his honorable discharge moved to Trenton, NJ.  There he met the love of his life, Travis.  He received his associates degree from Mercer County Community College and continued his academic studies at the former Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey).

On August 25, 1962, Walter and Travis entered into holy matrimony in Washington, DC. To this union they were blessed with two children, Michael and Daphne.

Walter proudly served as a member of St. John’s Baptist Church for over 40 years.  He was a member of the Trustee board, a role he took very seriously and held the office of Chairman during his tenure. Walter loved to sing and held down the bass section of the SJBC Male Chorus. He loved driving which led him to join the Transportation Committee and start driving the church bus.  He has driven many members and friends up and down highways and byways over the years.  He was given the moniker “the singing bus driver”, by those who had the pleasure of riding with him as he adeptly navigated the SJBC bus to various locations.

Walter worked as a truck driver for many years and was also employed by Champale Brewing Company before beginning his career as a well-respected Senior Correction Officer at the Trenton State Prison.  He retired from TSP (now the New Jersey State Prison) after 27 years of service.  He was a humble man who earned the respect of his colleagues and even the inmates who circulated through the Trenton State Prison.  He was fair and just and treated everyone he met with respect and kindness.  After retirement, Walter kept himself busy with a part time job working for American Bus Company.

Walter Perry was a friend to many and loved to talk, laugh and joke.  He could start a conversation with anyone anywhere and by the end of the conversation would be able to tell you their life story.  You could always count on Walter, Walt, Perry, Dood, to be there in your time of need.  Family meant everything to him and although he was an only child he had many “brothers”, “nieces” and “nephews”.

He is preceded in death by his Mother, Lottie Bell Hall, his stepfather Eddie Lee Hall and his father John Thomas Jackson.

Walter leaves to cherish his precious memories: his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Travis Perry; son Michael Perry, Sr. (Tracey); daughter, Daphne Perry; his grandchildren Shawntel Cole (Chris), Michael Perry, Jr., Marquis Perry, and Simone Johnson-Perry; great-grandson, Carter Cole; special niece, Carolyn “Sudie” Williams (Bennie Lee); godson, Adrian Sharp (Lynn); goddaughter, Tyronda Hughes (Carlos); and a host of family and dear friends.
