Walter Tinsley Barksdale

Walter Tinsley Barksdale of Trenton, N.J. peacefully departed this life on August 2, 2025 at the age of 89.

Walter was born on January 4, 1936 in Pittsy|vania County, Virginia. He was raised by his mother Ellen Barksdale-Ross and stepfather Charles Ross Sr., and was the biological son of Robert Irby.

In addition, Walter was educated in the Pittsylvania County school system. He later moved to Trenton, New Jersey. Rooted in the hardworking worlds of landscaping, farming and bartending, he eventually found his home at the Pennington Borough, where he built a meaningful and lasting career, retiring after many years of devoted service.

Walter's first marriage was to Shirley Wimbush, and from their union they were blessed with three children: Walter Tinsley Jr. Shirley Emily and James Grover. He later married rene Elis, and they welcomed two daughters, Tracie Reenotas and Kyra Lynn.

Waltler was allectionately known by family and friends as both Walt and Tinsley. He enjoyed simple pleasures- fishing, playing cards, trying his luck with his numbers, and cooking his signature meals, which included chicken vegetable soup, beef stew, pinto beans and fried pork chops. More than any- thing Walter cherished time spent with his family and looked forward to his annual family reunions, where his presence was always a joy.

Walter was predeceased by his mother and fathers; brothers Melvin, Charles, John Pearl Ros; his sister Willie Ann Harris; his son Walter Jr; and his wife Irene Barksdale

Walter is survived by his children: Shirley E. Calloway (David) James G. Barksdale (Brenda), Tracie R. McCummings and Kyra L. Colston (Gary); his grandchildren David A. Calloway Jr, Tierra L. McCummings, Kevin L. McCummings Jr., Eboni L. Calloway and Kyle J. Heading as well as a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

A Memorial service will be held at 11am Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at Hughes Funeral Home, 324 Bellevue Ave., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hour will be 10am until the time of service. Interment will be private.
