West Tanner Obituary

West Levitt Tanner

West Levitt Tanner was born on September 7, 1952, to Macon and Mattie Heckstall Tanner in Trenton, NJ. West was 70 years old when he departed this life peacefully on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly, NJ, where he was surrounded by his loving family.

West was educated at Trenton Central High School in Trenton, NJ. He worked as an assemblyman at Roller Bearing (~18 years), then in the Environmental Services department at Deborah Heart & Lung Hospital (~15 years), before becoming a bus driver for Pemberton Township School District (~5years). Later on, West became a truck driver for Penske where he received numerous rewards for his commitment and dedication.

In his early years, West enjoyed fishing at nearby lakes and, known to some as, being that “kool kat” on the block. West was described as a tinkerer who enjoyed understanding how things worked and often tried to improve the functionality of household gadgets. He was known to spend a lot of time in his workshop and has passed on this quality to his oldest daughter, Adilah. West had many other past times which included drawing, roller skating, studying theology, and watching documentaries/shows related to nature and cooking. He enjoyed sci-fi movies/shows and was a huge Star Trek fan, so much so that he had collected all of the earlier series and movies. West had the hands of an artist and the ear of a musician, which were qualities that he later passed down to his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, West was preceded in death by his 2 brothers, Lawrence Macon Tanner and Thomas Tanner, and 1 grandson, Stephon Taylor, Jr.

West leaves behind to cherish his memories, 5 sisters and 1 brother, Betty (Emanuel) Council, Celeste (Fred) Mitchell, Marvin (Nelline) Tanner, Norma Cooper, Joyce (Jerry) Neal, and Terry Tanner; special mention, Ida Tanner, first wife, who cared for him in the end; 2 children from that union, daughter Adilah Nijah Tanner-Taylor and Muneer Kalem (Chante) Tanner, 2 children from last union, Imani Tanner and Mizani Tanner; 4 grandchildren, Anaiah Tanner-Barnes, Stephon Taylor, II, Isaac Tanner, Myla Tanner; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
