William Burnett was born on May 19, 1935, to the late Richard and Lillian Burnett in Princeton, NJ. He was one of 10 children. He departed this life on June 3, 2023, at home, surrounded by family. On August 7,1954 he married the late Shirley Josephine Thompson Burnett. They were blessed with eight wonderful children. They started their family in Little Rocky Hill, and later moved to Monmouth Junction. William attended the Mount Zion AME Church in Little Rocky Hill as a young child and later became a faithful member and Trustee.
He was employed by Triangle Pipeline Company for 15 years and Higgins Disposal Company for 10 years. In addition, he was employed by Corvinos Disposal and Waste Management before starting his own trucking business in 1985. William was an excellent bowler and participated in several leagues at Colonial Lanes in Lawrenceville, and Brunswick Lanes in New Brunswick. He enjoyed fishing and was a former member of the Hit and Miss Gun Club. He enjoyed watching the Giants his favorite football team, as well as all the contestant-based games on the Game Show Channel. His most recent past-time activity was feeding the birds at Carnegie Lake. He also loved the music of Whitney Houston. He took great care of his beautiful wife during her time of illness. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and provider and will truly be missed.
William is predeceased by his parents Richard and Lillian Burnett, his wife of 66 years Shirley Burnett, a loving son Steven W. Burnett, seven siblings, Myrtle Page, Wilma Kornegay, Richard Burnett, Roland Burnett, Raymond Burnett, Johnnie Burnett, and Patricia Coleman. He leaves to cherish his memory four sons William Burnett (Anita), Robert Burnett (Pamela), Henry Burnett (Nicole), Martin Burnett (Lisa), three daughters Brenda Bynoe (Federico), Penelope Burnett, Charlotte Burton (Guiseppi), two sisters Shirley Jackson and Barbara Morrison, three brothers-in-law, Edward Thompson (Gloria), Joseph Thompson, Michael Thompson (Jennifer), two sisters-in-law, Beulah Burnett, Erlene Thompson, 23 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be 11am Monday, June 12, 2023 at First Baptist Church Of Eggerts Crossing, 121 Hillcrest Ave., Lawrence Township, NJ 08648. Calling hours will be 9am until the time of service. Interment will be at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick, NJ. Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home.
